iPhone 17 Pro Review: The Best iPhone for Creators in 2026

★★★★☆ 4.0 / 5 1 runner-up finish

The iPhone 17 Pro is the best iPhone Apple has ever shipped for video creators — and runner-up to the Oppo Find X9 Pro for Best Camera at MKBHD's 2025 Smartphone Awards. Triple 48MP cameras, ProRes recording, and the A19 Pro keep it the apex of the iOS ecosystem. If you live in Final Cut, DaVinci, or Filmic, this is the buy.

Pros

  • Best mobile video pipeline of any phone in 2026
  • Triple 48MP camera array with improved computational photography
  • ProMotion 120Hz, brighter outdoor visibility, and the most efficient mobile chip in the A19 Pro
  • Five years of major iOS updates remaining

Cons

  • Beaten on stills by the Oppo Find X9 Pro this year
  • Starts at $1,099 — and storage upgrades are steep
  • 8GB RAM still feels light for AI workloads
  • No major industrial-design changes from the 16 Pro

Design & Display

The 17 Pro retains the titanium frame and contoured rails introduced in the 15 Pro, with a marginally lighter weight thanks to internal restructuring. The 6.3-inch ProMotion OLED hits 2,000 nits typical and 4,000 nits peak — visibly brighter outdoors than the 16 Pro. Dynamic Island remains, the Action Button is unchanged, and the Camera Control button has been refined for lower accidental presses. It looks like an iPhone Pro. That's the point.

Performance & Software

The A19 Pro is the most efficient chip Apple has ever shipped and it shows in sustained workloads — ProRes capture and 4K render exports run cooler than the A18 Pro generation. iOS 19 brings deeper Apple Intelligence integration; on-device summarization, image generation, and Smart Replies feel meaningfully more useful than launch-era 18.1. Five years of major iOS updates remain — the longest support window of any phone in this price tier.

Camera

Apple iterated on processing rather than hardware: the same 48MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP 5x telephoto array as the 16 Pro, with new computational pipelines that improve dynamic range and reduce overprocessing in faces. For video, this is the best phone you can buy — ProRes Log capture with external drive recording, Apple Cinematic mode at 4K30, and full Final Cut Pro for iPad parity. For stills, however, the Oppo Find X9 Pro overtook the 17 Pro at MKBHD's 2025 Best Camera awards. Side-by-side, the Oppo's three lenses are more consistent — Apple's ultrawide is still slightly weaker than its main. If stills are your priority, the Find X9 Pro is the better buy where available.

Battery & Charging

Real-world battery beats the 16 Pro by an hour or two in mixed use. We saw 7–8 hours of screen-on time consistently. Wired charging hit 27W in our tests; MagSafe still tops out at 25W. There's no Qi2 ratification yet, which feels like a miss in 2026.

Apple Intelligence

The deepest Apple Intelligence integration so far. Visual Intelligence (point camera at anything to identify or summarize) is now reliable; Genmoji and Image Playground generate noticeably better outputs than launch. Most importantly, Siri's contextual understanding has improved enough to actually compete with Gemini and ChatGPT for everyday tasks — though it still falls behind on complex multi-step requests.

Verdict · 4.0 / 5

If you're an iOS creator who needs ProRes, Final Cut, or Filmic, the iPhone 17 Pro is the phone to buy in 2026 — there is no equivalent on Android. For everyone else, the iPhone 17 (Phone of the Year) is the smarter buy at $300 less. And if stills photography is your priority, MKBHD's 2025 Best Camera winner — the Oppo Find X9 Pro — beats it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the iPhone 17 Pro worth it over the iPhone 17?

Only if you specifically need: telephoto camera, ProRes video, the Pro chipset for AI, or the slightly larger battery. The standard iPhone 17 — which won Phone of the Year at MKBHD's 2025 Smartphone Awards — is the better value for most users.

iPhone 17 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: which has the better camera?

It depends on use case. The 17 Pro wins for video (ProRes, ecosystem) and the S25 Ultra wins for zoom (5x periscope, 200MP main). Neither won Best Camera in 2025 — the Oppo Find X9 Pro did. See our full iPhone 17 Pro vs Galaxy S25 Ultra comparison for details.

How long will the iPhone 17 Pro be supported?

Apple typically ships 5–7 years of major iOS updates. The 17 Pro should receive iOS support through approximately 2030–2032, plus security updates beyond that — the longest support window in this price tier.
